ABOUT

Kidnapped from her parents at age five and baptized into the brand new Santa Cruz mission, Esther grows up an abused neophyte in slavery to the Spanish. In the year 1806, she makes a desperate escape into the vast wilderness of Northern California. She runs only to find freedom, but by chance, she meets a mysterious people called the Twelve Tribes. They have a strange culture based upon astrology, in which each tribe follows a different sign from their own unique zodiac, based upon California indigenous animals. As Esther travels among them, she searches for a home and a husband among the tribes. But first, she must find healing, cast out her demons, and reawaken her slumbering sexuality. Wandering north, she experiences California as it was when hundreds of small tribes lived by the rhythms of nature and the ancient laws of treaty, trade, and tribute.

The Twelve Tribes is becoming one of my all time favorite books.  I stopped reading with two pages to go, because I didn't want it to end.

-Kathleen, White Raven

This is the first book in five years that has really gotten to me.  All I want to do when I get home is curl up in bed and read.  When I fall asleep, I wake up in the morning with drool all over the pages

I find Hale’s book so readable that it’s hard to put down.  He knows how to tell a good tale and has a very appealing writing style.  The eroticism is an added bonus.

This is one of the few books that I never get tired of reading. Your first time through will be a stunning revelation, an amazing insight into the heroine’s character; as soon as you read the last page you’ll inevitably turn back to the beginning to find anything and everything you may have missed. The characters seem like enemies and friends and family. The plot twists in unpredictable, surprising, elaborate ways. The dialogue is intelligent. And, most importantly, all of these elements blend together so well that you’ll wonder why in the world everyone hasn’t read Hale Mednick’s The Twelve Tribes. Ashland – Santa Cruz, Ca

i’m in love w ur book. i just finished owl tribe. i’ve been sick the past few days and just reading most of the day, which is kind of ok, cuz its hard to put the book down….i love descriptions of the landscapes, the sensory details, bits of history. i love the adventure, its so engaging, exciting, like ‘where r we going next?’ i really identify w esther in many ways, and the places i don’t resonate w, i feel compassion for. i enjoy how it is told from a objective p.o.v., mostly from her experience, but sometimes showing the perspective of other characters. its so captivating, the richness and depth of the way different people live. i love the astrology theme constantly running thru, following the cycle of the moon. each chapter introduces a whole new set of characters, which can b tricky to keep up w, but u masterfully engage the reader and make us care about and easily follow so many people. Erin, Santa Cruz

Hi Hale, It was hard to put it down.  I can imagine a yearlong miniseries, with maybe two hour episodes per tribe. The way you tied up so many details in the last chapter, you’ve even left room for a sequel. -Jerry Kessler
